  • Totally agree. Sri Lanka needs to move on from the tried and tested seniors. If you’re going to continue losing, at least give the youth a chance. At the moment, they are neither rebuilding nor progressing. I liked Dasun Shanaka’s captaincy in the T20Is he has captained to date.

My ODI Team for England (next series in England) and leading up to the World Cup:
    1. Dhanushka Gunathilaka
    2. Avishka Fernando
    3. Pathum Nissanka
    4. Kusal Perera (wk)
    5. Ashen Bandara
    6. Dasun Shanaka (c)
    7. Wanindu Hasaranga
    8. Dhananjaya Lakshan
    9. Dushmantha Chameera
    10. Maheesh Theekshana
    11. Nuwan Pradeep

    Reserves/ Players to think about:
    Batsmen
    Niroshan Dickwella
    Angelo Mathews
    Dhananjaya de Silva
    Sandun Weerakkody
    Charith Asalanka

    Spin Bowlers
    Nishan Peiris
    Akila Dananjaya
    Maheesh Theekshana
    Amila Aponso
    Lakshan Sandakan

    Pace bowlers
    Lahiru Kumara
    Asitha Fernando
    Dilshan Madushanka
    Kalana Perera

  • Tharanga doesn’t have the technique to play in swinging/ seaming conditions. He just pokes his bat out and knicks off. He’s fine on flat pitches

Get the youngsters in – there is no point protecting them and watching them decline in sub par club conditions.

    Prospects – Bats
    – Minod Bhanuka
    – Pathum Nissanka
    – Avishka Fernando
    – Manoj Sarathchandra (wk)
    – Shammu Ashan
    – Hashan Dumindu

    Prospects – Bowlers
    – Mohamed Shiraz
    – Lasith Embuldeniya
    – Jehan Daniel
    – Nishan Peiris
    – Asitha Fernando

    Prospects – All rounders
    – Kamindu Mendis
    – Charith Asalanka
    – Chamika Karunaratne

  • Niroshan Dickwella, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Kamindu Mendis, Thisara Perera, Jeewan Mendis, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga, Lahiru Kumara

    Reserves:
Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Nuwan Pradeep, Kasun Rajitha

    Pending Clearance:
    Akila Dhananjaya

In terms of the playing XI, a lot would depend on the conditions in terms of the all rounders and bowlers. If conditions suit swing/ seam – I would play Suranga Lakmal; otherwise I would leave him out for Kasun Rajitha. Likewise, I would probably play Dasun Shanaka instead of Kamindu Mendis. Of course, if Akila Dhananjaya is cleared he is automatically in the playing XI in place of Jeewan Mendis.

  • Yeah its a bit sad there is no depth in the spin bowling department in Sri Lanka. I understand that Sandakan, being a chinamen, will not be as consistent as a wrist spinner but he was not at all effective against NZ. Sure the pitches were not spin friendly, but the NZ spinners looked much more effective.

Would Kamindu Mendis be the next option? Who else is there?

Hopefully Akila will be cleared soon and moreover, hopefully as effective as he previously has been.
